Vo-Agriculture Program (High School Only)

 

The Vocational Agriculture program involves the study of agriculture and animal science.  It provides students the opportunity to practice what they've learned in the classroom in real-life situations while developing the leadership skills, work habits and attitudes necessary to succeed in any industry.  This is a secondary program only.

 

Competencies within the program reflect practical skills in management, business, marketing and a multitude of aspects of animal science.  Through formal and practical training, students gain the methods to make sound business decisions and become responsible farm managers and leaders.

Description of Courses

 

VOAG-165.  Beginning Gardening.  (90 Contact Hours).  This course covers home culture of vegetables, herbs, small fruits, bedding plants and fruit and nut trees.  Students also study types of plants, edible landscaping, selecting and preparing a site, fertilizing and controlling pests, treating and pruning, harvesting, and preserving.  Students start seeds in a greenhouse, transplant, and care for a food and plant garden.

 

VOAG-175.  Agriculture Technology I.  (180 Contact Hours).  This course is offered to beginning students.  General leadership, shop, agribusiness and animal science are covered.  Students are expected to complete a Supervised Agriculture Experience project throughout the year.  (Grades 9-12)

 

VOAG-176.  Agriculture Technology II.  (180 Contact Hours).  This course is offered to second-year agriculture students. Advanced classes in animal science, plant science, leadership, agriculture mechanics and agriscience build on materials covered in Agriculture Technology I.  (Grades 9-12)

 

VOAG-177.  Agriculture Technology III.  (180 Contact Hours).  This course is offered to students who have completed two years of agriculture course work.  Ag marketing, communications, genetics, advanced shop and animal science topics continue to develop on the skill set taught in Agriculture Technology I and Agriculture Technology II.  (Grades 11-12)

 

VOAG-180.  Leadership and Communication Skills.  (90 Contact Hours).  This course is designed to instruct the student in the correct usage of parliamentary procedure, public speaking, sales and service, job interviews, and group presentations.  Students increase leadership skills by planning, coordinating, and developing activities for their chapter, community, and other local organizations.  Prerequisite:  Class or Organization Officer.

 

VOAG-185.  Horse Care and Management.  (90 Contact Hours).  This course is designed to acquaint secondary students with horses and the horse industry.  Areas of study include:  functions, selection, types, breeds, classes, breeding, nutrition, buildings and equipment, health, training, horsemanship, and the management and business aspects of caring for the horse.

 

VOAG-200.  Leadership and Communication Skills II.  (90 Contact Hours).  This course is designed to expose the student to different leadership methods and theories and how to apply them to their everyday life and employment.  Prerequisite:  Leadership and Communication Skills.

 

VOAG-205.  Animal Health Care.  (180 Contact Hours).  This course focuses on how to care for animal health.  Areas of study will include animal maintenance, vet clinic supervision, anatomy of animals, cells and tissues, skeletal systems, circulatory systems, reproduction, digestive systems, feeding and nutrition, genetic and animal breeding and disease.  Studies include small and large animal care.  (Grades 9-12)

 

VOAG-206.  Agriculture Technology IV.  (180 Contact Hours).  This course is offered to students who have completed three years of agriculture course work.  International agriculture, current agriculture topics and advanced leadership skills are implemented.  Record keeping and life-long skills are emphasized.  (Grade 12)

 

VOAG-207.  Agriculture Skills I.  (180 Contact Hours).  This course is an exploratory class in developing personal skills.  Some areas covered include automotive care, electricity, machine technology, woodcraft, welding, auto body repair, animal care, horticulture and plant science. Prerequisite:  Must have completed two years of agriculture classes.

 

VOAG-209.  Agriculture Skills II.  (180 Contact Hours).  This course covers animal science, agriculture careers, leadership, occupational experiences, plant science, agronomy, agriculture mechanics, employability skills and on-the-job training skills.  Prerequisite:  Agriculture Skills I.
