Several players receive conference academic accolades
Several Coffeyville Community College baseball players demonstrated their talents in the classroom as well as on the field this past school year. Luke Anderson, Blake Hageman, Brian Harris, Blake Holovach, Kegan Knight, Conar Kreis, Kyle Rich, and Sebastian Stargell were all named to the KJCCC All-Academic Team. Congratulations to these student-athletes for a job well done.
Boling signs with Wichita Wingnuts
Former Coffeyville Red Raven pitcher JR Boling has signed with the Wichita Wingnuts
of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. Boling played for
Coffeyville in 2007 and 2008 under former Head Baseball Coach Ryan McCune. For the
past two seasons, Boling has pitcher for the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans.
A native of Gladstone, Missouri, Boling was 5-6 in two seasons with the Trojans, racking up 71 strikeouts in 68.0 innings while holding opposing hitters to a .244 batting average. He led the Trojans with a 3.53 ERA and three saves in his first season at UALR in 2009, and followed that up with a 3-3 record and eight saves his senior year. In 2010, Boling held opposing hitters to a .234 batting average and totaled 23 strikeouts against just four walks over 24.2 innings.
Acosta gets drafted by Cardinals, named to NJCAA All-American Team
It’s been a good week for Hector Acosta. First, he was drafted in the 48th round of the MLB Amateur Draft on June 9 by the St. Louis Cardinals. Then, he was named to the NJCAA All-American Team as an honorable mention selection.
Acosta, a sophomore catcher, set team records in 2010 for hits, singles, triples, runs scored, batting average, on base percentage, walks and stolen bases. Acosta hit .438 with six home runs and 53 RBIs in 60 games. Acosta walked 34 times and was hit by 15 pitches while accumulating a .556 on base percentage. Acosta led the Ravens with 38 stolen bases, 68 runs scored, five triples, and a .665 slugging percentage.
Acosta was drafted in the 50th round by the Cleveland Indians in 2008 out of high school. An Ogden, Kansas, resident who played at Junction City High School, Acosta was second team all-state selection his senior season. He was a second team All-Jayhawk Conference selection his freshman year at Coffeyville in 2009, but it was 2010 that Acosta hit his stride. In addition to the All-American accolade, Acosta was named both first team All-Conference and first team All-Region following the 2010 season.
Acosta will have until August 15 to reach an agreement with the Cardinals. If Acosta fails to sign with St. Louis, he will play for the University of Arkansas-Little Rock next season.
Three Ravens named All-Conference, Morgan Coach of the Year in Jayhawk East
The Ravens received several conference awards following the 2010 season. Hector Acosta was named first team all-conference at catcher. Acosta, a sophomore, set team records in 2010 for hits, singles, triples, runs scored, batting average, on base percentage, walks and stolen bases. Capturing honorable mention honors were sophomore third baseman Danny Marcuzzo and freshman outfielder Drew Burks. Marcuzzo led the Ravens with nine homers in 2010. Burks set a team record with 58 RBIs in 2010.
Head Coach Andy Morgan was named Coach of the Year in just his second season at the helm of the Coffeyville baseball program.
Morgan led Coffeyville to a 29-32 record, setting a new school record for wins, and a third place finish in the Jayhawk East, Coffeyville’s best ever conference finish.
Ravens fall to Butler, set record for wins
The Red Ravens nearly pulled off a final series sweep of Butler in the sub-region baseball tournament that concluded on May 11. Coffeyville won a must-win game to start off the afternoon, defeating Butler 2-0 while allowing just one hit to the Grizzlies, and forcing a final game to decide the sub-region champion. In the sub-region title game, both teams got their bats going, but Butler claimed the sub-region championship with a 14-10 win. The Ravens conclude the season with a 29-32 record. The 29 wins set a school record for wins, besting the 28 wins compiled in 2006.
Ravens clinch third in Jayhawk East
With Allen County’s doubleheader loss to Fort Scott on April 28, the Coffeyville baseball team clinched third place in the Jayhawk East. Third is the best finish for Coffeyville for at least the last 30 years. The Ravens completed conference play with a 21-15 record.
