Ravens honor 2009 top performers at banquet
The Red Ravens awarded top performers from the 2009 season at an awards banquet held at the Dick Foster Athletic Complex on November 16. Freshman running back Mulku Kalokoh was named Offensive MVP. Sophomore linebacker Talris Brown was named Defensive MVP. The team MVP was awarded to freshman quarterback Andy Summerlin.
Kalokoh, a second team All-Conference running back, has led the Ravens in rushing with 568 yards in ten games. Kalokoh also leads the Ravens with 45 pass receptions, averaging over ten yards per catch.
Brown, a second team All-Conference selection at linebacker, leads the Ravens with 87 tackles in 10 games. Brown has also has 12.5 tackles for loss, one interception and a forced fumble this season.
Team MVP Andy Summerlin was a first team All-Conference selection at his quarterback position. Quarterback Andy Summerlin took advantage of the Ravens’ spread offense and set a new school record for the most passing yards in a season. Summerlin has thrown for 2,302 yards this season, surpassing the previous mark of 2,177 yards set by Mike Long in 1978.
It was the second school record set this season by Summerlin. In the season opener at Navarro, Summerlin completed 32 passes to tie the school record for the most completions in a game. Summerlin tied Michael Machen who completed 32 passes in a game against Butler in 2004.
The Ravens dished out several other awards at the banquet.
Sophomore offensive lineman Nick Puetz received the Wayne Hittle Memorial Award. The Wayne Hittle Memorial Award was begun in 1959 by Dr. Clarke Bumgarner as a tribute to his 1951 Red Raven co-captain. This award is given annually to a sophomore lineman who demonstrates the high moral character, the degree of excellence and the love for football exemplified by Wayne Hittle. The recipient is selected by a committee of coaches and friends of Hittle and approved by Dr. Bumgarner.
Puetz also received the Pete Peltzer Outstanding Offensive Lineman Award. This award is given each year in recognition of the highest graded offensive lineman throughout the season. The selection is made by the coaches. The award was renamed in 1992 to honor Pete Peltzer, former Red Raven player and coach.

Sophomore wide receiver Anthony Sanchez was the recipient of the President's Trophy. The President's Trophy, begun in 1975, is given annually by the President of Coffeyville Community College to the outstanding sophomore football player who conduct is exemplary off and on the field. The recipient is recommended by the coaching staff with final selection being made by the President.
Sophomore wide receiver Eddie Shields received the Cliff Long Award. The Cliff Long Award is given annually to the most improved football player who has been in the Red Raven football program for two football seasons.
Sophomore defensive end John Robles got the Hall of Fame Award. This award, begun in 1969 by the Community State Bank, is presented annually to a Player of the Week who excelled on the field.
Defensive lineman Sylvester Williams was named the Outstanding Freshman. This award, begun in 1972, is given to the most inspirational freshman player. The award's recipient is selected by members of the football team.
Brandon Mosley received the Reb Russell Memorial Football Scholarship Award. Mosley, a sophomore, played both defensive end and tight end this past season for the Ravens. The Reb Russell award is given by family and friends of the late Faye "Reb" Russell, Coffeyville's first All-American football player who was selected in the 1930's from Northwestern University. The award is a tribute to Russell and his lifetime interest in his hometown football program. The young man selected for this honor must be an outstanding athlete from out-of-state.
Sophomore wide receiver Benji Love was named the Karl Wilson Memorial Award winner. Established in 1981, the Karl Wilson Memorial Award honors a sophomore football player who distinguishes himself in the academic field and who represents the high degree of Christian living exemplified by Karl Wilson, former dean and ardent supporter of Red Raven athletics. The recipient is selected by a committee from recommendations of the coaching staff.
Sophomore quarterback Larry Burnshire was awarded the Barbara Jean Pendleton Scholarship. This award was established in 1981 by the Quarterback Club and is presented to a sophomore who exemplifies the true Red Raven spirit and dedication to athletics. The recipient is selected by the coaching staff in honor of Mrs. Pendleton, who retired in 1990, after many years as an instructor and alumni director at CCC.
Sophomore running back Edd Noonan received the Nolan Luhn Award. Established in 1983 by friends of Nolan Luhn, this award is given to the player who exemplifies the true spirit and unselfish attitude of Coach Luhn, a former coach who has given countless hours and provided a "home away from home" to many Red Raven football players.
Sophomore linebacker Justin Haupt was named the Tim Cooke Memorial Award winner. Established in 1987 in memory of former defensive end Tim Cooke, this award is presented to an in-state individual from the Kansas City area who demonstrates outstanding leadership qualities.
Freshman defensive back Demetrius Stone was honored with the Ethean Johnson Memorial Scholarship. This award was established in 1997 in memory of former Raven Ethean Johnson. This award is presented to a player that has great moral character and demonstrates an outstanding pride in being a Raven.
Sophomore linebacker Emmanuel Jackson received the Dick Diveley Memorial Scholarship. This award was established in 1999 in memory of former Red Raven booster Dick Diveley. From 1975 until 1990, Dick fired his shotgun at every Red Raven football game. This award is given to the player that shows the most enthusiasm and true love for the game of football that Dick had.
Two players were honored with the Red Hat Award. This award goes to red shirt freshmen with perfect attendance, unselfish scout team habits, great work ethic, good classroom attendance, and a desire to get better and always shows Red Raven pride. This year’s recipients were Bryan Presume and Field Kindley graduate Greg York.
The Ravens will complete the 2009 season on Saturday when they face Rochester Community and Technical College in the North Star Bowl in Rochester, Minn. Game time is at 2:30 p.m. and is the Ravens first bowl appearance in three seasons.
