Ravens storm back for overtime win over Blue Dragons
Coffeyville-Hutchinson Stats, Play-by-Play, Etc. (courtesy of the Raven football stat crew)
Have sympathy for the fans who left Veterans Memorial Stadium early on Saturday night. The temperature in the second half was 40 degrees with a stiff north breeze lowering the wind chill to a frigid 33 degrees. Oh, and the Ravens did trail 31-7 with 13:20 left in the third quarter. But, for the diehard fans who did stay, they witnessed one of the greatest comebacks in Red Raven history.
The Ravens began chipping away at the deficit while the offense was still playing into the wind during the third quarter. The Ravens drove 75 yards in 11 plays to set up a short 20 yard field goal for Kelyn Pohlman that cut the lead to 31-10. On the ensuing Hutchinson drive, Coffeyville’s Deron Bruce intercepted a pass from the Blue Dragons’ Angelo Pease and Coffeyville was back in business on the Blue Dragons 45 yard line. Four plays later, Eddie Shields scored on a 32 yard pass play from Andy Summerlin. Pohlman’s extra point made it 31-17.
The Ravens weren’t done. With the wind at their back for the fourth quarter, the Ravens cut further into the Blue Dragons lead. Brandon Mosley scored his second touchdown of the game on a 20 yard pass from Summerlin with 13:42 left in the fourth quarter. Pohlman’s extra point cut Hutchinson’s lead to 31-24.
Hutchinson would answer with a 10 play, 73 yard drive culminated with Ray-Ray Davis’ 11 yard touchdown reception of a Pease pass. Kelly Roberts’ extra point extended the Blue Dragons’ lead to 38-24 with 8:00 left in regulation.
The Ravens, though, would not fold. The Ravens quickly got back into the end zone with a five play, 63 yard drive that took just over two minutes to complete. Summerlin finished the drive off with a one yard touchdown run. Pohlman’s extra point reduced Hutchinson’s lead to 38-31.
Hutchinson went three and out on their next possession and were forced to punt. Punting from their own 17 yard line into the stiff north wind, Hutchinson gave Coffeyville excellent field position with an 18 yard punt, giving Coffeyville possession on the Blue Dragon 35 yard line. Six plays later, Summerlin pushed into the end zone for another one yard touchdown run. Pohlman’s extra point was good, tying the game at 38-38 with 1:21 left in regulation. Hutchinson was unable to get into field goal range on the regulation period’s final possession, forcing overtime.
Coffeyville won the overtime toss and elected to go on defense for the initial series. Hutchinson elected to go with the wind, but the Ravens’ defense held and forced the Blue Dragons to try a 38 field goal attempt. The kick had plenty of distance, but missed wide right.
Needing just a field goal to win the game, the Ravens’ offense decided matters for themselves. Mulku Kalokoh ran for six yards on first down, moving the ball to the 19 yard line. On second down, Summerlin rushed for 16 yards, stopped on the three yard line with an ankle tackle. On first and goal, Kalokoh was stopped for no gain, but on second down, rushed into the end zone for a three yard game winning touchdown, sparking a Red Raven celebration on the field.
Summerlin had a big game for the Ravens. He connected on 22-of-38 pass attempts for 332 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed 14 times for 56 yards and two additional rushing touchdowns. Kalokoh had a big night receiving, catching 11 balls for 114 yards. Mosley, a big and fast tight end, caught two touchdown passes and had four receptions overall for 117 yards. Shields had the other touchdown reception and caught two passes overall for 48 yards.
Chris Clay ran wild for the Blue Dragons, rushing for 176 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown. Pease completed 8-of-12 passes for three touchdowns and one interception. Coffeyville had 394 yards total offense while the Blue Dragons had 387. The game was about as evenly matched as possible statistically and on the scoreboard.
The win improves Coffeyville to 3-2 in conference play and to 4-3 overall on the season. The Ravens are now in the driver’s seat for the number three seed in the Jayhawk Conference playoffs coming up in November. If the Ravens can win Oct. 24 at Dodge City and at home on Oct. 31 against Independence, they will be guaranteed a number three seed and will either face Butler or Fort Scott in the first round.
Hutchinson falls to 3-3 overall and to 2-3 in conference play. Hutchinson’s post-season aspirations will largely depend on the outcome of their game with Garden City on Oct. 31 in Hutchinson.
Coffeyville has a bye week coming up and will not be in action on Oct. 17.
