Cannon signs with Purdue

Rashad CannonSophomore jumper Rashad Cannon will continue his career after Coffeyville with a jump to the Big Ten Conference.  Cannon will compete next season for Purdue University after signing a letter-of-intent with the Boilermakers.

“It’s a good fit for me,” said Cannon who was also recruited by Iowa and North Carolina.  “They have the type of coaches I’m looking for and it’s a great, prestigious school.”

For Purdue, Cannon will compete in the long jump, triple jump, indoor 60 meters, outdoor 100 meters and will likely be a member of the 4 x 100 meter relay team.

In 2008 for Coffeyville, Cannon made the NJCAA All-American team in indoor long jump, indoor triple jump, and outdoor long jump.

This season, Cannon finished 11th in the long jump and 13th in the triple jump at the 2009 NJCAA Indoor National Meet.  The top eight finishers at the national meet achieve All-American status.

So far, Cannon has qualified for the outdoor national in the long jump, triple jump and will likely be a member of the 4 x 100 meter relay team.  The 2009 NJCAA National Outdoor Meet will be held May 21-23 in Hutchinson, Kansas.

“I’m hoping to make All-American again this year at the national meet,” said Cannon.  “I also want some personal bests, do something I haven’t done before.”  Cannon holds the school record in the indoor long jump with a distance of 24-09.25.

Cannon originally came to Coffeyville for football.

“I came on a football scholarship, and when the coaching change took place, I decided to switch directions and concentrate on track,” said Cannon.  “It’s a decision that paid off.”

“I’m really excited for Rashad,” said Coffeyville Head Track Coach Craig Perry.  “He’s worked really hard while at Coffeyville and he really deserves the opportunity to move up to the next level.”
