Simpson signs with Missouri Southern

Brandy SimpsonWhen Brandy Simpson arrived at Coffeyville Community College in the fall of 2007, she possessed good athletic skills, but not a master of any one event.

“She was good in a number of events, but not really great at any one,” said Head Track Coach Craig Perry.  So the decision was made to try Simpson at the multi-events, and as the saying goes, the rest is history.

As a freshman in 2008, Simpson just missed All-American status in the women's heptathlon and the women's javelin at the national outdoor meet.  Simpson placed tenth in the heptathlon with 3,863 points.  In the javelin, Simpson placed ninth with a throw of 34.93 meters, or 114' 7".

At the 2009 national indoor meet, Simpson, a sophomore from Zanesville, Ohio, finished ninth in the pentathlon with a total of 2,616 points.  The top eight at the national meet are declared All-Americans.

For the 2009 outdoor national meet, Simpson will likely qualify for the heptathlon.  She is currently ranked fourth in the nation; the top 16 will qualify for the national meet.  Simpson has also qualified for nationals in the long jump and javelin.

Simpson’s improvement caught the eye of a number of four-year college programs and as a result, she has the opportunity to continue her track career.  Simpson has signed a letter-of-intent with Missouri Southern University in Joplin.

“The school wasn’t too big, the girl’s coach is a great person, and the team had such a great atmosphere when I visited,” said Simpson explaining her decision.

Simpson has a friendly rivalry with teammate Septembra Teuscher.  Teuscher is also a national qualifier in the javelin.  In 2008, Teuscher was an All-American in the javelin, finishing second at the national meet.

“We’re best friends, so it’s a healthy competition,” said Simpson.  “She helps me with my technique, she cheers me on and I cheer her on.”

Simpson, a physical therapy major, is looking forward to competing at the NJCAA National Meet in May.  “I want to score 4,000 points in the heptathlon and beat the school record,” said Simpson.   The school record of 4,226 points has been held by Lisa Coppin since 1994.
