Raven runners compete in national meet
The Red Raven cross country teams competed in the NJCAA National Cross Country Meet in Peoria, Ill. on Nov. 14. The Raven men finished in 26th place while the women placed 28th.
Sophomore Prince Nwokorie was the top finisher for the men, completing the 8k course in a time of 28:26.
“Prince passed over 50 runners over the last three miles of the course and just looked smooth the whole time,” said head cross country coach Craig Perry. “Prince had a great career for us in cross country and I can’t wait to see what he can do during the track season.”
Three freshmen runners followed Nwokorie. Justin Falley completed the course in 29:30. Falley was followed by Carlos Lopez, 29:36, and Ethan Ward, 29:37.
Three other sophomores competed in the national meet for the Ravens. Finishing with a time of 30:03 was Darnell Pittman, followed by Martin Hojda, 30:26, and Tyler Perry, 30:31.
“Although these sophomores will be greatly missed, we do have some great building blocks for next year,” said Perry. “Having three freshmen in our top four overall will really help with experience, leadership, and talent next season.”
In the women’s 5k race, sophomore Jordan Earle was the top Raven finisher. Earle turned in a personal best time of 21:41.
“She had a great career for us, her leadership will be missed next year,” said Perry. “I am so proud of the way she competed in this meet and I look forward to seeing what she can do this year in track.”
Freshmen Amy Boren was the next Coffeyville finisher with a time of 22:14. Close behind were a pair of sophomores, Letti Zapata, 22:24, and Alicia Whitehurst, 22:29.
Also running the Raven women were sophomore Jasmere Love, 23:13, and freshman Kayla Taylor, 24:15. Taylor’s time was a personal best.
“These girls worked extremely hard this year and had the best season for any women’s cross country team in CCC history,” said Perry.
“I am very proud of all of our girls, but especially our sophomores who gave it all they had for two years and finally started seeing some of the results they were wanting this season,” said Perry. “They are the start of what I think will be a very good program in the future and I am very thankful to have had these girls over the last two years.”
The cross country teams will take a week off before joining the rest of the track team in training for the beginning of track season. The indoor season will begin in January with the outdoor season starting up in March.
The Ravens will host one meet this spring, the annual Dean Pryor Invitational on May 1. The meet will be held at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
