Raven women’s and men’s cross country teams both finish third in conference at region meet

The Region 6 Cross Country Meet was held on Saturday, October 24, in Overland Park, Kansas.  The Raven women placed third in the Jayhawk East standings and fifth in the Region 6 standings.  The Raven men placed third in the Jayhawk East standings and eighth overall in Region 6.

The top five women finishers for Coffeyville in the 5k race placed in a pack with a 26 second differential.  Placing 17th in the region was freshman Amy Boren with a time of 22:18.  Following Boren was Jordan Earle, 22:24, Jasmere Love, 22:28, Letti Zapata, 22:40, and Alicia Whitehurst, 22:44.

“They had a great meet and I really could not ask for more than what they gave on that day,” said Coffeyville head cross country coach Craig Perry.  “The course was slow and the women’s team really pushed themselves to the next level and beat some teams we were ranked behind all year.”

Also competing for the Raven women were Kayla Taylor with a personal best time of 24:51 and Symone Scott, 29:54.

In the 8k men’s race, Coffeyville was led by sophomore Prince Nwokorie with a time of 28:40.  Following behind in a pack were Carlos Lopez, 29:07, Ethan Ward, 29:11, and Justin Falley, 29:18.  Also running for the Ravens were Martin Hojda, 30:37, Tyler Perry, 30:45, and Ike Sumpter who set a personal best time of 31:54.

“We tried out a new strategy and went out a little faster than we have been and it really did not work out like we were hoping,” said Perry.  “The men gave full effort and really competed, but the faster first mile really hurt us in the later stages of the race.”

Both the men’s and women’s teams will compete in a couple of weeks at the NJCAA National Cross Country Meet.  The meet will be held on Nov. 14 in East Peoria, Illinois.

“Both teams have goals of finishing in the top 25 in the nation, and we really have a chance to do that,” said Perry.
