Tarita GordonGordon inks with East Tennessee State University

When Tarita Gordon moved with her family from Jamaica to the United States as a ten-year-old, soccer, not basketball, was her passion.  Ten years later as a graduating sophomore from Coffeyville Community College, basketball is helping to pay her way to a four-year college degree.

Gordon signed with East Tennessee State University during a signing ceremony on May 6 at CCC.  East Tennessee State has won back-to-back Atlantic Sun Conference titles.  Last season, ETSU lost to Iowa State in the first round of the NCAA Division I basketball tournament.

“I’m going to a school I felt comfortable with,” said Gordon.  “They needed a point guard and I felt like I could fit right in.”

Gordon, who also starred on the Red Raven soccer team, will be a one-sport athlete at East Tennessee State.

Oh, sure, Gordon is still passionate about soccer.  She earned second team Jayhawk Conference honors this past fall playing for the Lady Ravens soccer team and led the team with 19 goals scored in 14 regular season games.

“I’m going to miss soccer, it’s something I’ve known all my life,” said Gordon.  “Basketball is a sport that challenges me and I know if I work at it, I can be good and that’s what I like about basketball.”

On the basketball court, Gordon was selected to the second team KJCCC East All-Conference team in 2008-2009.  Gordon averaged 11.5 points per game and led the Lady Ravens with 133 assists and 47 steals.

As a freshman, Gordon averaged ten points per game while leading the team in assists and steals.  The Lady Ravens have compiled a 50-14 record in Gordon’s two years at Coffeyville.

“My game has gotten better since I arrived in Coffeyville,” said Gordon, a graduate of Wichita’s East High School.  “I understand the game more.  There’s still more to learn, but that will come along with experience.”

Gordon, a business major, is not concerned about the challenges ahead on the court and in the classroom.  “All you can do is fail, and I’m not scared of failing,” said Gordon.
