Taja Green signs with Univ. of Tampa
Coffeyville Community College women’s basketball standout Taja Green signed a letter-on-intent on April 20 with the University of Tampa, a NCAA Division II institution in Florida.
Green was also recruited by Kansas Newman, Wayne State, and Upper Iowa University.
Green, a sophomore guard/forward from Peoria, Illinois, was second on the team in scoring last season, averaging 9.7 points per game. She led the team in rebounding with 6.3 boards per game and was third on the team in assists with 49 for the season.
Green was an honorable mention selection on the All-Conference Team last season and was also selected to the All-Region VI Tournament Team. As a freshman, Green was second team All-Conference and honorable mention All-Region.
Green will be entering into a successful program at Tampa. Last season, the Spartans finished 26-6, losing in the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. Tampa has won at least 23 games in each of the last four seasons.
“I didn’t want to go to a losing school,” said Green. “And when I went on my visit, I felt like I could contribute.”
Green will compete for a forward spot at Tampa. “I just have to go in and work hard,” said Green.
Green will pursue a Nursing degree while at Tampa. With a winning athletic program in place, and her college major offered at Tampa, Green is excited about the opportunity she has.
Green is also excited about not having to deal with winter for a couple of years.
“The weather is great. No snow, no shovels, I won’t have to warm up my car for twenty minutes,” said Green as she ticked off a number of additional positives about playing in Tampa.
